About Women's Legal Service WA

Women’s Legal Service WA is a specialist community legal centre funded to provide free legal services for women in Western Australia. WLSWA delivers services to women who are financially disadvantaged, and who live with multiple vulnerabilities that creates other barriers to accessing justice. We focus on victims and survivors of family, domestic and sexual violence.

Socio-legal assistance is tailored to ensure continuity in support and mitigate re-traumatising clients.

WLSWA works alongside and compliments generalist community legal centre work. WLSWA also promotes women’s human rights to be upheld and fosters legal and social change through a range of strategic activities, including law and policy reform.

About the roles

We are looking for lawyers who share our passion for women’s education and empowerment within the legal system.

WLSWA lawyers provide information, advice, referral, advocacy, community legal education and court representation to women in Western Australia in need of legal support and who meet WLSWA eligibility criteria. The gender-specific and trauma informed casework includes all areas of our service – family law (children’s issues), protection and care matters, family and domestic violence and criminal injuries compensation.

There are a number of positions currently vacant in different program areas. We will give more details about these and negotiate contracts with the successful applicants.

Whilst these positions are full-time, there is also provision to configure part-time arrangements between successful applicants too.

Based in the Perth office, lawyers are required to undertake some travel around metropolitan Perth and/or regional Western Australia, depending upon the program area recruited into.

Taking initiative, problem solving and a ‘can do, will do’ attitude will ensure the position holder is empowered to work autonomously. Being an effective team member is also essential.

Unrestricted lawyers committed to working to ensure best outcomes for women in the legal system are encouraged to apply. We will also consider expressions of interest from exceptional restricted legal practitioners.

The WLSWA leadership comprise a Chief Executive Officer, Principal Legal Officer and Head of Operations. As a member of the legal team, lawyers report to the PLO.

For a confidential discussion about the position, please contact Principal Legal Officer Stephanie Monck at [email protected] using the subject line: Lawyers enquiry via EthicalJobs or 0439 313 028.

A position description is attached.
