The key focus of this role is to facilitate the successful running of WWDACT’s community engagement and peer events, especially those that are part of our ILC grant project.

  • 2 Casual Workers – both averaging 16 hours per fortnight
  • Level 3.1 - Social, Community, Home Care & Disability Services Award 2010 (Currently $45.00 p/h - 2023 FY rates)
  • Reporting to Engagement Program Manager
  • Based Pearce Community Centre, Pearce ACT 2607. Community engagement events will take place at various venues across Canberra

Women With Disabilities ACT (WWDACT) is a systemic advocacy and peer support organisation for women, girls, non-binary people with disabilities in the ACT and region. WWDACT follows a human rights philosophy, based on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). WWDACT is a Disabled People’s Organisation (DPO), governed by women* with disabilities, and its proposals and recommendations to government are consistent with Article 4(3), and Article 29 of CRPD.

The Position

The Community Facilitators are two new roles, and will be part of the Engagement team, reporting to the WWDACT Engagement Program Manager, and working alongside the Engagement Project Officer.

The Community Facilitators will prepare, organise, and facilitate regular community building and peer support activities including but not limited to crafternoons (craft-afternoons), social coffee meetups, and movie screenings. Community Facilitators will build rapport with WWDACT members and attendees during events, helping to build our membership and grow our community engagement program.

Community Facilitators will receive training in first aid, mental health first aid and accidental counselling. You will be assisted in developing a working knowledge of individual advocacy services and disability supports, to be a source of information for members who attend our events.

Community Facilitators will work both independently and collaboratively with the WWDACT Engagement Program Manager and Community Engagement team.

Objectives of this Role

  • Plan, prepare, organise and facilitate regular fortnightly community & peer events that align with WWDACT’s community engagement program,
  • Support WWDACT members and program attendees when they attend WWDACT events, while having a strong consideration of various accessibility needs and understanding that people come from a wide range of lived experiences,
  • Support the Engagement Program Manager to ensure the successful delivery of the WWDACT’s community engagement program in line with the WWDACT Strategic Plan, grant obligations and guidelines.

The Duties

  • Plan and organise community engagement events such as crafternoons, coffee catchups, film screenings and more; including accessible venue booking, input in event promotion and acquiring any required activity resources or materials in advance.
  • Co-Lead and co-facilitate activities during community engagement events for women* with disabilities, providing a comfortable and safe space for members and participants to form new friendships and build community connections.
  • Note any questions, concerns or systemic issues members raise at events, to report back to the broader WWDACT team.
  • Gather feedback from participants to support program evaluation, both formally and informally.
  • Provide input on the development of graphics and resources, including resources for self-advocacy and institutional support that is available for women* with disabilities in the ACT.
  • Actively participate in team meetings and staff development activities as organised by WWDACT.
  • Be a point of referral for members and participants at events to outside individual advocacy supports, and when reasonable, may provide support in the form of accidental counselling
  • Other duties as required to support the organisation.

Selection Criteria

An ideal applicant:

  • Has confidence in facilitating community activities, workshops, and/or discussions.
  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of the lived experience of people with disabilities and other intersections, and knows that there are systemic challenges that people with disabilities face.
  • Is eager to support WWDACT members in building a strong community by creating a safe, comfortable, and accessible space for members to form friendships and community connections.
  • Has a strong ability to communicate with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
  • Is trauma informed and can navigate complex situations should they arise.
  • Able to hold and draw boundaries between personal and professional relationships, for their own wellbeing.
  • Can work effectively as part of a team, is honest, reliable, a creative thinker and open to new ideas. Able to take direction and work independently.
  • Has confidence in undertaking organisational and administrative tasks such as making phone calls, booking venues, keeping track of, and replying to emails etc.

Additional Requirements

  • Strong Computer literacy, including proficiency with the following applications and digital tools:
    • Microsoft Office Suite
    • Canva
    • Mailchimp
    • Social media applications such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok
  • Written communication skills.
  • Current Australian driver’s license preferred and has their own vehicle to travel between the WWDACT office and various event venue locations across Canberra. Desirable but not required.
  • Current WWVP (Working with Vulnerable People) card or willingness to obtain.
  • All relevant and up to date COVID-19 vaccinations
  • Availability between 9am-5pm to fulfill an average of 16hrs/fortnight, with availability for occasional Saturday and evening shifts.
