The key focus of this role is to support the running of WWDACT’s engagement project, with a focus on coordinating and organising monthly workshops.

  • Part-time: 12 hrs/week
  • Classification Level 4.1 - Social, Community, Home Care & Disability Services Award 2010 ($43.08 per hour)
  • Reporting to Engagement Program Manager
  • Based Pearce Community Centre, Pearce ACT 2607. Community engagement events will take place at various venues across Canberra.

Women With Disabilities ACT (WWDACT) is a systemic advocacy and peer support organisation for women, girls, non-binary people with disabilities in the ACT and region. WWDACT follows a human rights philosophy, based on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). WWDACT is a Disabled People’s Organisation (DPO), governed by women* with disabilities, and its proposals and recommendations to government are consistent with Article 4(3), and Article 29 of CRPD.

The Position

The Project Officer is a new role, and will be part of the Engagement team, reporting to the Project Manager, and working alongside the Community Facilitators.

The Project Officer will be responsible for the successful running of monthly workshops on a wide range of skills selected in consultation with the WWDACT membership. The Project Officer will work with various stakeholders and build strong stakeholder relationships to ensure the smooth running of these workshops. Additionally, they will build rapport with WWDACT members and attendees during events, helping to build our membership and grow our community engagement program.

The Project Officer will receive training including first aid, mental health first aid and accidental counselling.

The Project Officer will work independently in their role, with oversight and support from the Program Manager and broader Community Engagement team.

About the 'Our Autonomy' Project

WWDACT has received a substantial grant funded by the Commonwealth Department of Social Services through their Information, Linkages and Capacity-Building (ILC) Individual Capacity building (ICB) grant round. The project is titled 'Our Autonomy,' and will take place over 3 years, ending in June 2027.

The project aim is to build the leadership skills, confidence and systemic advocacy skills of women and gender diverse people with disabilities. WWDACT will deliver a strong series of themed skill and knowledge building workshops each year on topics chosen and co-designed within the disability community.

In addition, peer events will be run by our community facilitators to build connections amongst members. Lastly a yearly WWDACT publication will be a platform for women and gender diverse people with disabilities to share writing, art and more, with yearly launch events.

The Duties

  • Be responsible for planning, organising, and creative input into the successful running of workshops as part of the Our Autonomy Project while having a strong consideration of various accessibility needs and an understanding that people come from a wide range of lived experiences.
  • Chairing workshops as part of the Our Autonomy Project, facilitating respectful discussion throughout the event.
  • Research and engage quality subcontractors and workshop presenters for each workshop over the project's life.
  • Liaise with, maintain, and strengthen relationships with stakeholders to support and enhance the impact of the project and the organisation.  This will include working closely with workshop presenters and subcontractors to deliver the workshop and resources.
  • Support consultation and co-design activities, including but not limited to designing and distributing surveys, facilitating meetings with the membership, and gathering informal member feedback.
  • Support the promotion of workshops and events through basic graphic and social media post creation
  • Support the development of program evaluations. Distribute feedback forms and other forms of evaluation to the membership.
  • Participate in team meetings and staff development activities as organised by WWDACT.
  • Support the Program Manager to ensure the successful delivery of the WWDACT’s community engagement program in line with the WWDACT Strategic Plan, grant obligations and guidelines.
  • Other duties as required to support the organisation.

Selection Criteria

An ideal applicant:

  • Strong research skills and/or networks, to engage appropriate subcontractors and workshop presenters for the project.
  • Strong verbal communication skills both in-person and on the phone, to be utilised in discussions with stakeholders, venues, subcontractors, WWDACT members, event attendees and others as required. Strong ability to communicate with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
  • Strong organisational skills, such as the ability to prioritise tasks, ability to see tasks to completion and meet deadlines. Basic event management and administrative skills such as booking venues.
  • Strong understanding of the lived experience of people with disabilities and other intersections and knows that there are systemic challenges that people with disabilities face.
  • Is eager to support WWDACT members in building a strong community by creating a safe, comfortable, and accessible space for members to learn and grow their confidence. Is trauma informed and can navigate complex situations should they arise.
  • Can work effectively as part of a team, is honest, reliable, a creative thinker and open to new ideas. Able to take direction and work independently.
  • Basic Marketing skills such as creating social media posts, graphic design, etc.

Additional Requirements

  • Strong Computer literacy, including proficiency with the following applications and digital tools:
    • Microsoft Office Suite
    • Zoom (for online workshops and activities)
    • Canva
    • Mailchimp
    • Social media applications such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok
  • Written communication skills.
  • Current WWVP (Working with Vulnerable People) card or willingness to obtain.
  • All relevant and up to date COVID-19 vaccinations
  • Availability between 9am-5pm to fulfill 12hrs/week, with availability for occasional Saturday shifts.
